NADJA LIND INTERVIEW // LUCIDFLOW

Guten tag Nadja Lind and welcome to SHA. How are you today?
Nice to be here, hello. I am very good actually, thanks. :)

Growing up in Mannheim Germany, you were very musical as a child playing flute and acoustic guitar. What were your influences growing up?
From Classic Music (e.g. Mozart) to 80′s Neue Deutsche Welle (Trio) to Heavy Metal (Slayer) to 70′s (Hendrix)…

You played your debut dj gig on New Year’s Eve 2003. How did you make the transition to djing and get this breakthough?
Yes that was great and I was so nervous that I hardly could put the needle on the records! How did I make the transition? I kept on doing what I’ve been doing – I’ve followed my inner voice or impulse and this impulse always wants to play or make SOUND

Since then you have played all over Europe, the US and India. What has been the highlight of your djing career so far?
So far this was Kazantip 15th August (my birthday) 2011 where we (Helmut and I) performed Klartraum live at this amazing festival at the Black Sea! HUGE!

You also produce your own music and have an extensive solo back catalogue with releases on labels such as Darkroom Dubs, Soma, Ministry and Gatspiel. How would you describe your own personal sound?
I like dominant snares and kicks even in my deeper and house tracks. But in general it is very hard for me to describe my sound since I am not stuck to a particular style. So far I’ve produced techno, tech-house, loads of dub tech and also some real dub (reggae) and even meditation drone waves :) What I don’t like so much is if there are too much vocal or the WRONG vocals that destroy a beautiful track for my ears hahaha… It’s very rare that I really get excited about vocals but it exists e.g. the 1st record in my DJ set I’ve made for you.

I found a video on youtube which shows you working on Ableton Live after making the transition from Reason. Is this still your preferred production software?
Defo YES – I’ve become so familiar and fast on Ableton + I’ve bought Max for Live and of course Urs Heckmann’s AWESOME ZEBRA 2.5! Do I look like a Zebra already? haha

In 2006 you formed Klartraum with fellow producer Helmut Ebritsch. The name translates to a stage of a lucid dream where you are aware you are dreaming yet can manipulate your surroundings. Can you explain how this name and feeling manifests itself in your music?
Klartraum is always produced on 2 parallel systems by me and Helmut synchronized and mixed together on the fly. So you will recognize more layers in our music. Helmut is the more organized part and I am more intuitive and chaotic who is taking care of tiny little fx or vocal snippets and weird sounds. Klartraum is always of an extraordinary brilliant sound quality since Helmut also does professional mastering for labels such as Stil vor Talent, Soma, Darkroom Dubs and also Lucidflow of course. But meanwhile I have improved and do the mastering of my tracks on my own and even Helmut is not complaining (that’s saying something!)

As Klartraum you not only produce but play live sets in Berlin and beyond. How does a live set compare to a normal dj set?
More beyond than Berlin to be honest. Live set for me means that all the Klartraum tracks are devided into little loops and pieces on my Ableton (which is about 30m long) Likewise Helmut’s set. When we play live our 2 systems are routed together and synchronized so we perform a different set every time we play. I play e.g. kick drum and some percussions and hats of Pain Relief and Helmut plays some synth layers of our track Causal Waves and we also bring in our own sounds let’s say some nice drums or some vocals or fx + Helmut playing live on his keyboard in flow. So there’s always a different Live set when we play.

DJ set nowadays means for me almost playing only my own tracks and Klartraum or some remixes I/we did or tracks from my Lucidflow label…

In 2009 you and Helmut started you own record label, Lucidflow, where you have released not only your own Klartraum music but work from producers such as Silicone Soul, Steve Rachmad, Carlos Sanchez and Terry Francis. What is the ethos of the label?
Keep up the good quality! We are not so much into whether the style is techno or house but we are very picky regarding sound esthetics, quality and passion. Music is a transport of feelings and so my best indicator for good sound is if I am getting goosebumps and being touched. This is what Lucidflow stands for. Awesome sounds, not necessarily of a certain genre but always profound!

Lucidflow’s 24th release the Mr Orange EP from Leenn’y was released on November 12th. (It includes other tracks Mr White, Mr Green and Mr Blonde; very Reservoir Dogs-esque!). LF025 Paul Loraine & Saytek “Fundamental” was out December 12th includes remixes by Helmut and yourself. How happy are you with the progress of the label so far?
Very happy. Lucidflow has developed and evolved very nicely and is getting more attention, attracting more and more well-known DJs and producers and also fans. I am very satisfied to have the possibility to do what I love and work together with so amazing and talented beautiful artists. I am deeply grateful for all the support from our fans and friends. THANK YOU!

Finally, what does 2012 hold for Nadja Lind, Klartraum and Lucidflow?
