RICHIE G

Hi Richie, thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for SHA. Your new release Ritchie G // Eterna / But Her Fly was released on the 23rd of January on Bedrock Digital. What does this new double pack say about you as an artist?

Hi. Thanks for having me. Firstly, thanks to John, the whole Bedrock crew and everyone who is supporting the EP! Well, these two tracks are some of the best ones I’ve made, up to now, in my opinion, and I hope people will like them as much as I do. “Eterna” was initially produced to be a club track, but I added an experimental touch so that it would sound different to usual club tracks. “But Her Fly” is supposed to be a techno track with melodies that would catch your attention emotionally.

Early Support for the tracks has been encouraging and you yourself receive plaudits from key players like Digweed, Sasha, Zabiela and Cattaneo. Having only turned 18 in December, how does it feel to receive such great support as you move into the public eye?

It’s amazing to see such legendary DJs supporting my music. All of these names above have been a great inspiration to me musically ever since I started. A few years ago I was dreaming of working with some of these people, and I think it’s great that they support young/new acts. I feel very fortunate to work with professionals like John Digweed and Hernan Cattaneo as well as the Hacienda. I just watched the movie “24 Hour Party People” and learned about the history of The Hacienda – very inspiring!

You have managed to squeeze a lot of work into your tender years. With a previous Bedrock remix of Luis Junior // BG at only 15, a Microtrauma remix on Traum and your debut Baum EP on Hacienda Records. How did you make the initial breakthrough, which became the catalyst for everything that followed?

When I made “Baum” about 2 years ago, I sent it to James Masters from The Hacienda, who forwarded it to John Digweed. He was interested in the track and gave me the opportunity to remix Luis Junior’s “BG” for Bedrock. I guess from there I got confident, since I was getting support from people like The Hacienda and Bedrock at a young age. I continued making music and released stuff on Traum, put out the “Baum EP” which Hernan Cattaneo & Soundexile and Jesper Dahlback were kind enough to remix. Now, to release my own material on Bedrock is a real honour for me. “Eterna” and “But Her Fly” are two of the best tracks I’ve made up until now, and I really appreciate all the support I’ve been getting.

During an interview with Ferreck Dawn we found that although he also had success at a young age, he decided to complete his studies and went to University before focusing solely on music. Do you have any similar plans or are you know completely focused on a music career?

Well, I am planning on finishing my studies… although that might take a while because I may take a break and focus on music for a year or so before entering into university. But all this depends on how the music advances. At the moment I am managing to do both and not focusing solely on music.
What other artists and musicians inspire you and is there anyone you would love to work with someday?

Besides Sasha, James Zabiela, Sven Vath, Paul Kalkbrenner etc., more Progressive/House artists and DJs usually inspire me. Mark Knight, The Martinez Brothers, Danny Tenaglia, Eric Prydz, and especially Deadmau5 are all great producers to me. I love electronic music in general, so whether it’s minimal or house, I appreciate anything that has a nice rhythm to it.

Finally, what can we expect to see for the rest of 2012?

I have a Traum release lined up this year and I’m looking to do another EP with Hacienda Records. I’m looking to develop my DJ career here in Montreal, where two of the greatest clubs in Canada are located: Circus Afterhours and Stereo. Afterhours and Circus are organizing a party for my Bedrock release in February, I’m looking forward to that. Lastly, I’m looking forward to getting some gigs in other countries and cities this summer, now I’ve finally turned 18!

My love for electronic music started in my early teens. Fascinated by my friend Scott’s Technics 1210’s and wealth of mixtapes, I used to ‘borrow’ his tapes and make copies. Read more about me by clicking here.
