SHA Podcast 166 // Christer McNulty
We’re back with more midweek grooves today featuring the tech laden sounds of Christer McNulty. Christer has been working away in the studio with our own Mike 13 and today we give him his own platform on which to shine..
Christer’s interest in music began at an early age, growing up with the sounds of Ultra Sonic, TTF and of course the legendary DJ Tom Wilson’s Saturday Night radio show (1992) which made him fall in love with Dance Music and planted the seed of desire that would keep on evolving over the following decade and more.
It wasn’t until his first job at the age of 16, (1996) he was able to save up and purchase ‘that first set of decks’… by this point his inspiration came from class leaders such as Brothers in Rhythm, Sasha and John Digweed who lead him on a new and exciting musical journey of epic house.
It was inevitable that his passion for music & his DJ’ing ability would lead the way to being a regular face in the DJ ciruit in his home town of Edinburgh. This presented plenty of opportunities to play alongside some of the UK most talented DJs which only fuelled his passion for the dance music industry.
Not only known for his DJ’ing talent, Christer is also a successful promoter and in 1998 he got together with Vestax and started one of the first DJ competitions in Scotland (The Scottish Vestax Open Decks DJ Competition). Giving bedroom DJ’s the opportunity to break free from their restraints with a chance to be recognised and possibly win one of the many DJ guest slot prizes he had secured from club nights in Scotland & Spain. The competition was a huge success which lasted for over 10 years but sadly came to an end in 2008. During that time, the competition had discovered countless DJ talents with a large part of the Edinburgh club scene now dominated by the talent that emerged.
Christer is also the founder and promoter of Phunkdup which has been running in Edinburgh for the last 7 years. During this time he has taken the club to Ibiza, Hamburg and countless other destinations playing host to a number of reputable guest DJ’s. Currently you can catch Christer & his resident DJ’s once a month at the popular night spot “The Street”.
In 2008 Christer turned his hand to production and teamed up with Mike 13. Together they brought to the stage their own unique sound which reflects in all of their productions. From their first remix of the legendary track “Phoenix – Rise Up” to their most recent remix of “Papi – Last Border” the future looks promising.
With over 17 years of DJ’ing experience, Christer has carved out his own unmistakable style where you will hear him playing soaring, future-funked pulsating vibes which descend into the filthiest of fire-fuelled beats that will have any dance floor panting for more.
