SHA Interview // Fabio Giannelli

We have another exclusive interview for you all today and today it is the turn of a producer who can list a productions cv including Supernature, Maison D’Etre, Get Physical and Kindisch. Not half bad for a man only in his mid 20′s. Craig ask the questions for Fabio Giannelli…
FABIO GIANNELLI
Hello Fabio and welcome to SHA. How are you today?
Very nice, just back from one week in Barcelona…that place really put me on a good mood!
You have a new EP on Maison D’Etre entitled ‘1986’, which is also the year of your birth. Tell us the story behind this new EP?
It is a resume of my musical background and influences over the last years, but it’s also a kind of rebirth in another dimension, that’s why I’ve chosen “1986” as the title.
You are no stranger to the label having also released the ‘Grenouille EP’ just over a Year ago. How did you first get involved with this imprint?
I have been in contact with Ant (one half of Audiofly) way before the launch of the new imprint, we met up on Skype for pure case and from that day we have always been in contact. First I was involved on Supernature with an EP and then it has been natural and spontaneous to release on Maison D’Etre and I’m happy and proud to be the first guy to release on this new platform.
We recently interviewed Audiofly and they had kind words about some of their newer artists including you.. ‘From beginning to end of the process, they are in control, they own their sounds. Straight away, from the word GO, they both had their own identity in their music..’ An excellent appraisal I’m sure you will agree. How do you respond to these words?
I’ve been a big fan of their music for long time before getting in contact with them, they have been the first ones to really believe in my sound so I’m very very happy to read these words! Big big love
A competition is running giving the chance for fans to win the new EP early by writing creative reviews of the tracks. Have you got any tips for potential entrants?
Just be creative, original…..and hard with criticism if you don’t like it : )
You started getting into electronic music quite early, getting a set of turntables and a mixer at only 13 years of age. What influenced this decision at that age?
I had a special attraction for music from the early years of my life and I was always searching for a way to express all that love and passion… meanwhile my big brother was the dj at some birthday and beach parties so I had the opportunity to have my first contact with the turntables (when he was not at home…..lol), and it started from there.
Since first dabbling with production in 2006 you have crossed genre’s and enjoyed success on many labels, not only Supernature and Maison, but also imprints like Get Physical, Kindisch and Hypercolour. How has your music adapted over the years and what inspires you to keep the sounds fresh and relevant?
As my mood changes, the music changes, there are days when I feel very romantic….going in the studio those days will probably put me to make a more gently and emotionals sound, then the day after, when I re-open the project, I can be on another mood… maybe more dark or more solar giving another face to the track.
Sometimes this makes the contrast but is exactly what I am and what I feel like during the process of production of that track. Sometimes it comes out totally different from what it was when I started, I like to leave it coming out very spontaneous and don’t want to force the process in any way or start making music with a pre-made idea. It’s hard to explain… and I’m not very good with words : )
I think you’ve explained it perfectly! Your music has also made it’s way onto several compilations recently. Steve Lawler’s Viva Music Warriors and Paul Woolford’s The Lab are two massive releases to be selected for. How does it feel to be picked for a release by such influential artists?
It’s a very pleasant sensation and I feel amazed and honoured to get the support of such big artists!
You also have your own imprint, District Raw. Tell us a little about the label?
The label was born in 2009 with the intention of releasing music I like without any kind of limitation or paranoia, and this is still the main leitmotif. The next release is coming from Tish & Kirill Kirik, it will be hitting Beatport very soon! Also soon there will be a full release coming from me too.
Finally, your facebook page hints at some ‘top secret remixes’ on the way this Year… can you release any more information on these yet?
It is still secret stuff but some news will appear on my facebook page soon, so just look at that space sometimes : )
