Roberto Clementi // Feelings Of Empathy [Soma]
Feelings of empathy are in short supply during the 8am train based commuter run. I speak from experience as I sit here, displaying my finest “like a boss” face, after positioning myself on the train platform where the doors eventually settled, letting me stride on to occupy the final spare seat, ahead of a clutch of post-Jubilee weekend, blue looking Joe Publics. Luckily an early morning love for my fellow man isn’t required to sit back and enjoy Roberto Clementi’s new EP for Soma.
I’d first discovered Roberto a good few years back, while mining Creative Commons netlabel Unfoundsound for inspiration, and was immediately struck by how his direct and playful sound stood head and shoulders above its immediate company. His Techno edged sound is extrapolated over this four track release, a sound that has a constant sense of anticipation rather than the sheer abandon of saucepan banging.
Lead track, Feelings Of Empathy, lets brassy swells and beautiful cascades of piano shower down around you, accented by the bright hit of the 909 open hihat. Out Of Prism is dubby Techno simmer with emphasis on beatier side of things, a building churn driven forwards with a punching tough edge instead of dubs usual gaseous atmosphere.
Motion A continues the dubby sentiment but is happy to let you get lost in the hypnotism and echo, a warmer and more welcoming reception than the steel bars of Out Of Prism. Closing track, Purple Flight is the equivalent dancing on tiptoes, the tense string drone, the little off beat melodic stabs and acidic squelch, all designed to pull you up by your collar but not release.
