Phil Weeks // P’s Theme [Robsoul]

The prolific Phil Weeks returns with a killer funk-fuelled three tracker on his own Robsoul label.

The recent album was well received in many quarters but this is equally worthy of a thorough investigation. “Dance Girl” works up a distinctly funk fusion bassline that has an almost Lonnie Listion Smith “Expansions” feel about it. Add in some interesting sci-fi noodling keyboards, a rack load of filters and we are in the zone marked between Daft Punk and DJ Sneak.

Title track “P’s Theme” and “Thinking of You” show exactly what the artist stands for with its strong use of funk elements again strongly to the fore. All the roughness of an old T Connection 12” and a strong nod to the filter disco sound of the late 1990s.

Overall, the tracks work well without doing anything incredibly new, but in an era of electronic perfection, they will add more than an ounce of soul to your set.
