London-based Pete Dafeet has already won plaudits from the likes of Mark Farina, Danny Tenaglia and Laurent Garnier. “Stutter” will further cement his growing reputation for creating solid house grooves that could have been lost in a dusty vinyl vault since 1987.
Thankfully, and in part due to the emergence of online sharing, we live in an era that realises what an amazing period this was. The recent re-release of old Nu Groove material on Rush Hour, for example, has been the talk of older “heads” and those turned on by the new school like Maya Jane Coles and Miguel Campbell.
The original mix on this 12” is all about a simplistic groove, nice raw drums and bass line with rough-it-up keys all leading to a synth high that would have Trax fans salivating back in the day. Well-programmed, timeless, effective.
Moodymanc, fresh from his recent gem “Father” on Landed Records adds two percussive grinding mixes that stretch out the elements while adding a bit of space and punch to the package. The Drum Dub in particular will work wonders in the mix across other tracks with neat effects and rhythm work minus any other tangible elements.
Two additional tracks from Pete Dafeet are also worthy of your attention on this release. “Rush” is another bass-led deep house moment with emotive strings and New York house groove a la Jovonn…true underground music which, for a fleeting second, almost makes me wonder what exactly has happened of relevance in house music since 1992 that we have landed back here…no bad thing either.
Finally, “Peace la Paz” takes another scoop of that early house blueprint and puts a smile on the face with a bubbling, soaring, driving groove that meanders in and around the frequencies with a massive drop.
A new school producer who seems to know his house heritage…and a label worth keeping an eye on.
