Hot! Pete DaFeet // Freeze [Lost My Dog]

You know we like it. The bendy synthed ode to joy that Shades Of Gray crafted out of Pete Dafeet’s Freeze is a work of genius – the little ecstatic crowd chatter and off beat kicks press the corners of your mouth in a firmly upward trajectory. What of the other four tracks on this latest issuing from Lost My Dog?

The best place to start is the source of Shades Of Gray’s remix, Pete’s original version of Freeze. It’s decidedly more stripped back than the reworking, but the way the piano and electronic keys let the bassline work around them is really effective, like stepping back into an end of night moment from the mid 90′s all those years ago. In comparison, Murat Kilic’s remix finds itself muscled to the back of the stage by the other two versions, chunky yet subtle but lacking either the breathiness of Pete’s original or the escapism of the Shades Of Gray remix.

This release isn’t just dominated by Freeze; Mistakes throws together detuned pipe bass and organs over a classically structured piece of talk track House, and Grit Your Teeth walks a similar if tougher path, except using a hook that is remarkably like an accordion doing an impression of a police siren.

Solid as every track is, I just can’t help but be drawn back to that Shades Of Gray remix, which I think provides the perfect summary for this little piece of analysis.
