Paul EG // Adhering To The Shell [Definition Records]

Brazilian producer Paul EG has a four track tech house package out this week on Definition Records. Cat and Hornet, as it being first in the running order suggests, is a stand out – dark and deep with a heavy bassline and punchy beats, it gathers more momentum in the first minute than the title track or the remix can muster in their entire running time.
There is a real menacing swagger to the track with nice drum fills and evil vocal snatches fleshing things out nicely. It comes close to outstaying its welcome clocking in at just over 7 minutes, but it is a soild effort to open the package.
Next we have the undoubted star of the show, the Mihalas Safras remix. Lovely layered, rattling percussion and very prominent congas set the scene before the big bassline arrives.
The same vocal snippets as the original are still present but this mix has a much warmer feel to it – the sinister edge of the original does still lurk around in the background though, becoming prominent in the early break, before the track gets its groove on again.
This is a really solid groove and is sure to get crowds shuffling in the early part of the night.
The only mystery is why the release is named after the the Adhering The Shell track – it is nothing to write home about and the skittering beats, more prominent percussion and numerous fx of Maurizio Vitello’s remix doesn’t make much of a case for it either.
