Omid 16b pres. DaBilla // Slap [Sex On Wax]
Omid Nourizadeh AKA Omid 16B is always a busy boy, and this month sees the release of Slap with long time friend DaBilla, on SexOnWax Recordings. This is a large release, featuring the original and 5 remixes, and of the package Mr 16B had the following to say: -
“It’s always impossible to create a package of mixes that will suit everyone’s needs, but we’ve certainly tried our best to get as many varied interpretations so that you guys will have at least one you drop in your sets, otherwise you can just give us a slap!”
The package is billed as ‘Omid Nourizadeh presents DaBilla’, though Omid 16B is given a sole production credit on Omid’s Dark Dub, which starts us off here – it’s a fairly solid house groove, with a mute bass type main melody being supplemented nicely with some cowbell. The Demi remix is next up, and is eleven and a half minutes of abstract noodling on top of a jazzy bassline, all of which did nothing for me.
Paolo Mojo’s remix is a very welcome injection of menacing momentum with very raw low end playing nicely off some nice clean beats – a dramatic edge is also provided by a nice pad. O’s Club Mix, as you would expect, is very similar to the dub but with the addition of a distorted vocal and an off key melody that don’t really improve things.
The SLP remix is the deepest and by far best thing on offer here, it being a lovely, warm, fuzzy groove with very nice percussion – it also features some sweet snare rolls and the vocal undoubtedly sounds the best in this context. Finally we have the Original mix, which is punchy and definitely has its moments, but is a bit too meandering for me overall.
When all is said and done, Omid has SLP and, to a lesser extent, Paolo Mojo to thank for saving him from violence.
