Hot! Macromism // Break The Cage [Kling Klong]

Kling Klong are nothing if not consistent, without a doubt you are guarenteed a set of party time Tech House tracks that go “oooma-oooma-shakka-shakka” in each release. What this does mean, however, is that any deviation from the template sticks out. This could be like a sore thumb, or this could be like a shining diamond, and in the case of the Alli Borem remix of Break The Cage, its the latter.

It’s a sweaty basement groove, reminiscent of Karenn’s rework of West Norwood Cassette Library’s Get Lifted, powered by a swinging bassline and a hollow kick. The distorted vocal and random metallic breakdowns lend an unpredicatable edge to a genre that usually heavily signposts its intensions.

This aside, the remainder of the Macromism tracks – the original of Break The Cage, Deep Deserve and Le Trick C’est Chick – strike out in a similar fashion; bassline led tech house grooves that intensify with midrange percussive flourishes. Le Trick C’est Chick possibly stands out as the most interesting of the remainder, dropping in some brassy horns and lofi keyboards to break up the mood.

Still, if you’re anything like me, your rewind button will be getting jabbed back onto that Alli Borem remix, and you would be perfectly justified in doing so.
