Hot! Lopazz & Alex Flatner // Our Love EP [Get Physical!]

A new Lopazz release popping up on Get Physical!, amidst the standard weekly tsunami of releases, may be as surprising as a Sun rises in morning exposé, but there is something about this collaboration with Alex Flatner that deserves your attention.

Title track Our Love has that Housepop sensibility that is usually reserved for the likes of Gusgus, its vocal hook of “don’t expect love from me tonight” licks out over a simple catchy melody, while the percussion sits on a pleasingly intimate reverb soundstage, making it feel like it is set in a club from top nights past, committed to patchy memory fading.

Over the course of the three tracks the intensity is dialled back, Just A Memory is slower, sour, with a vocal that sounds like a depressed swarm of bees, very much aiming for the Emo-Disco sound of now. A three note bassline works particularly well with the variety of arrangements on show, managing to shift in emphasis without ever breaking groove.

2Night brings up the rear with a sad slow jam, featuring sounds that border on a classical electro arrangement, backed up with the emotion of a soundtrack for a wake disco. The elements pack punch for its considered tempo, but it’s certainly music of internal reflection, not heady abandon… and considering I have possibly ruined a £300 suit yesterday, I shall let this play out as I weep into my laptop bag. Goodbye forever.
