Jonny Cruz // Devil’s Hex EP [My Favorite Robot]

Toronto-based MFRR deliver another strong release, continuing a very busy 2012 with Puerto Rican label mainstay Jonny Cruz.
Over two tracks – each with a remix – we are treated to his dark electronic world of mystery, lost technology and brooding groove. The title track is all of these things as it traverses across the type of landscapey synths that Eno would have been proud of and a weird vocal that delves in and out of the mix. Think Steve Bug…and you’re close. Avatism and Jeremy P Caulfield are hot just now and they revisit the track with a more slamming take that is more “sound system” as it tweaks and clicks in to gear.
“Sex Rocket” is a sleazier affair with it’s Prince-type beats and voluptuous bass line and is all about the groove rather than the journey. Fur Coat add a bit of spice with a more driving version but overall it veers more into electronic turf than anything soulful.
As a result, it’s the first track I prefer and it’s another fine excursion on a label that’s 60 releases in and showing no signs of slow-down.
