John Monkman // Follow Me [Get Physical]

With the nights creeping in and the deeply human urge for company, it’s lovely to capture an exceptional audio hug in the deliciously deep Follow Me.

John Monkman has been described as ‘bold and unpretentious’, which is certainly a valid statement for this release with collaborator Liz Cass. The bpm is kicked down as the beats roll-out powerfully and precisely, the bass is filtering away perfectly in the background before dropping with rounded and warmth, the sound is stripped – but fills the air with some nice reverb touches and cool fill. There’s some great use of resonance on the bass-synth too, to ensure the dynamic is maintained.

This provides a perfect stage for Liz to enter the fray with her stunning vocal work. It’s restrained, fragile and beautiful and captures my heart on the first listen. There’s also some cool pitching done to the vocal to thicken the sound in a very clever manner. It’s always brilliant to hear great song writing at the centre of a production. A stunning piece and I am beside myself when I hear the subtle nuances at the main break. There are some magical guitar strings being popped around the air and synth crashes tumbling towards me before I cascade back into the loveliness of it all.

A sensational song that should be sought out immediately… brilliant!
