Gary Beck // Before The Crash [Soma]

Short, sharp and fierce techno – Gary Beck’s tracks this year have headed straight for your knackers like an irritated pitbull. Before The Crash is the complete antithesis to Berghain’s stark industrialism, bolshy beats and a horn riff not to dissimilar to the controversial Sandy B rip, Camisra’s Let Me Show You. Expressive range isn’t the target here, although this is more than made up for by the relentless sub bass pump that tenderises your senses, Before The Crash is all about total dancefloor abandon.
While the barest of elements carries Before The Crash along just nicely, Hopkin foregoes its humanity in favour of becoming the machine. The piston pump churns like clockwork, but this is no substitute for a real heart and real soul.
As an advance for a forthcoming album, it will be interesting to see how Beck’s first work long play pans out. Before The Crash raises questions as to whether it will be a collection of contemporary weapons for the box, or a more balanced spectrum of the Techno landscape.
