Ferdinand // Ferdinand 2 [Eintakt / Rauhphaser]

Wipe away all fears that Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand has made his first foray into Moombaton, this is a release that is scant on artist details but compensates with some serious groove. Anyone familiar with the jazzy house outings of Nick Holder and his DNH Records stable will immediately be at home with the smoke laden grooves within this four tracker.

Dejazz loops a detuned stumble of double bass loop over over a low slung house groove, simple but darkly effective. Drunken Hair’s percussion is more sparky, with a snappy syncopated snare leading the march over filtering jazz saxophone and half uttered vocal samples.

The stand out moment belongs to Deepsun and its solitary remix. Instantly more accessible and direct, it works fragments of samples into and out of focus during the track like the foamy wash of waves over a beach. Nominated remixer Johannes Albert immediately provides a contrast to the collection by opening a window to the smokey atmosphere. Away drifts the sepia tones of the original, to be replaced by the bright bounce of the TR808, accompanied by light, breezy sunrise melodies.
