Nubian Mindz has, since his days producing early broken beat jazzy electronics, been one for the raw and gritty side of sound. More recently, he has appeared on such labels as Delsin, Rush Hour and Archive, cementing a reputation among a new school of fans in the modern house arena.

This is perhaps my favourite release of his from this newer era of his. Relentless, dry and Detroit-esque, we have three compelling grooves on display that marry soul and machine in uncompromising style.

There is a darkness at play amidst the tracks “Let Me Up” and “Only Lover”, with sinister aspects welded to nagging riffs and no-nonsense drum programming. It creates an intoxicating brand of warehouse material that reflects a sense of urban decay.

The soulful element is visited beautifully on “Take Me Back” as it brings a distinctly London soul vocal feel to a slab of moody, midtempo, beatdown house. What I love about the track is the way it continues a lineage of soul interpretation from the capital that stretches back to the Talkin’ Loud days and into the broken labels like Bittasweet and People. But, having visited many soul nights in the early 90s, I can recognise its influences from the likes of Sundays at Dingwalls and Maximus on Leicester Square.

So, a distinctly London feel but an artist who has embraced the Berlin side of life and with results that are well worth checking out.

There are few DJ’s who work on the same level as Sasha. Still revered as much today – as the recent plaudits for the third part of his Involver saga are evidence of – as he always has been, he’s highly respected for the innovation he laid out from the very start of his career; aiming to take his DJ craft to the next level when he first became a highly revered name in the field. So we’re pleased to be able to announce that Sasha will be stepping up to perform in Room One on the 25th May, where he’ll also be joined by our stalwart resident Craig Richards.

In Room Two, Efdemin and Marcel Fengler’s mutual desire to constantly push their musical and production boundaries will collide in their techno arrangements. The duo are fresh off the back of the first outing of their DIN project producing music for the ‘EVOLVE’, the third suite of the Berlin State Ballet’s Masse. Guest selector Untold will likely showcase some of his rough and relentlessly inventive creative techno sounds.

Jaunt Music hail from Newcastle and London and they’re set to raise the stakes in Room Three with residents, Blackhall & Bookless and Richard Rowell inviting Chicago hero, Boo Williams to the booth. Boo has been part of the Windy City’s house music entourage since 1981, producing and remixing some of the best tracks of that era such as ‘Flashback’ and citing Glenn Underground as the reason he first got into music production.

As a teaser for the forthcoming album Life And Black And White, which will be coming out on his Klasse Recordings label, Luca Lozano has drafted in rising talent Amirali, from Crosstown Rebels, on vocals duty for Sail On.

To say the mood of Sail On is sombre is a bit like saying wood is a bit woody – Amirali’s tone is downbeat and the low tempo house groove is adorned with mournful piano. The chunky beats provide a glimmer of sunshine, but this is music for solitary reflection, not for arm waving and hands clapping.

Remixers Session Victim manage to craft an anthem for the melancholic out of the source material, upping the tempo and discovering a warmth within the overcast mood of the original. Paolo Rocco’s broken beat drone turns out to be a choice interpretation, shifting from glitches and crowd samples towards an ending that leaves you feeling surprisingly emphatic.

Unusually the closing track from Lozano, Blanket Groove, moves in the opposite direction. Essentially a throwback house groove, having all the expected hallmarks – familiar sounds and rigid drum machine pattern programming. The intro and outro bookmark this section with broken beat phases, and the ending serves to remove all the momentum and involvement the classic house groove builds. An anticlimactic ending for the release this may be, it doesn’t detract from the collection of Sail On tracks, their quality is assured regardless.

As the world edges nearer to the halfway point of 2013, we are presented with a remarkable package of bass-laden house treats freshly cultivated at the Shenoda laboratory and tested on (party) animals at the Saints & Sonnets office. The fledgling label co-owned by Jimmy Posters and Huxley has gained heaps of momentum over the last twelve months, firing out a barrage of quality from label mates Jammhot, Annie Erez and Huxley himself during its fruitful lifespan.
Laurie Shenoda, UK based beatsmith and all-round house don provides three original cuts for Saints & Sonnets, further consolidating his burgeoning reputation as a master of the dark side. Shenoda’s current output on 1trax, Hypercolour and Losing Suki has accrued support by way of a diverse array of producers ranging from Jimpster to Mosca and the dubstep aristocracy of Skream & Benga.

Title track ‘I Feel’ is an addictively undulating ride through swells of low end crunch and shards of sharp percussion. Opaque strings complement an on-point vocal, colluding with waves of nocturnal ambience, augmenting sonic tension towards a rather tasty breakdown and a drop as steep as the Red Bull half pipe.

‘Love Thing’ tramples all in its path as a booming slice of pacey, dark garage vibes containing the moodiest bassline since the heyday of RIP productions. In contrast to the urban nod, the soundset is delectably murky in trademark Shenoda style, clawing back the garage connotations somewhat and creating a mutated subby houser that will no doubt appeal to the bass crossover crowd, yet still sounds equally as awesome pitched down in a deep house set.

The stumbling, glitchy editing of the vocal, floating percussion patterns and the detached, dubby synth washes of ‘Suntrap’ are engulfed within a copius amalgam of mighty low end. Slouchy drums ooze fragments of broken funk, met halfway with resonant chopping pads that develop towards a sweet breakdown, the building pattern providing an unstable hinge at the top of a fidgety ladder before dropping back in with all guns blazing.

For their second release, Glasgow based label Animal Farm Records have looked close to home and drafted in Edinburgh’s seasoned techno producer Stephen Brown. As a man who was exposed to classic house and Detroit techno via Yogi Haughton’s classic sessions at the Hoochie Club, there is a learned approach to the sounds on offer on the Tangents EP.

Rather than plod the well trodden path of overcast and gloomy kick drum techno, Brown spins a pair of tracks with the soul and jazz that Detroit often brought to the mix. In fact, Reflective Practice actually has a hint of Charleston as it kicks off, but you can put your fear of Doop aside as it develops into a twinkly, yet not twee, cosmic journey, reminiscent of Fabrice Lig’s Soul Designer output from many moons ago.

Tangent itself is more reflective in mood, opting for dreamy held tones to accompany the frantic percussion and half-time metronomic tick. Markus Suckut is drafted in on remix duties, retaining the mood of Tangent but lending a Berghain edged bottom end to the track, giving a meatier aspect to what are promising first steps for the fledgling label.

Release Date: Out Now (digital / vinyl)

Following sharply on the tail of her ode to analogue that was Detroit based artist Erika’s debut solo album, the Hexagon Cloud remix package is one that stays respectful to the understated and classy source material. Obviously this is helped by drafting in a selection of producers whose collective experience can be spoken of in decades, adding credence rather than hipster flirtation.

Tow Ride is treated to a subtle reworking by Marcellus Pittman, rickety echoes clatter around the lightest touch of piano in a loose sounding production that is far from the clinical perfection that accompanies the digital era.

Following this, Orphx’s touch on North Hex comes upon you in two waves; gently fading in with a deep, wet bass stab and a lonesome pad rising gently to a false crescendo. As this slips away from view, the beats begin to echo and a whole host of extra elements layer in as you reach the true climax of the track.

As co-owner of Interdimensional Transmissions, Erika has the advantage of pulling in partner BMG for the final part of this remix package. Cellular Meltdown has a powerful foghorn of bass that cuts through the blanket of analogue hiss, the track peaking—subtly—with discordant acidic burbles before fading away like a passing storm, aptly closing off this classy release.

We bring the second of the two part special for this weekend’s SHApodcast. Tonight we have Anthony stepping with some deep and luscious techno to enhance your Saturday night, plus the concluding part of the Open Underground interview.

Moving across into your life as DJs, how has your sound been shaped over the years?

Frazer: I started off playing happy hardcore and drum & bass. I loved it so much. I partied at World Dance, Helter Skelter, Fream fm parties, Labyrinth and all sorts of banging do’s! in fact I remember queuing for a Dream fm party at Bagleys and noticing the so call ‘cool’ people standing outside that silly little club under the arches – The Cross. I thought the place would be full of poncey people who weren’t real ravers like me – how wrong you can be. A friend of a friend dragged us there one day and said you guys need to dress a bit smarter, grow a bit of stubble and go there…you will love it…..he was right.. from there the passion for house music started..thank you ‘spike’ that was his nick name.

Today my true passion is bumpy Jackin percussive house and more recently I’ve been become a big fan of today’s more approachable groovy Techno. [Thanks Tony] I love a broad range of the spectrum and love making deep house to techno. It must have a groove and percussion that you cannot help to move to! Always.

Tony: My introduction to the underground music scene started in the early noughties and visits to some of the old skool London hotspots helped to shape my passion. Back then I loved the funkier and progressive sides of house. Over the last 4-5 years I have become more absorbed in Techno and this has been underlined by many trips to Fabric and Berghain Berlin which has changed my style. Today I look for all sorts of electronic music , as long as it has a raw underground melodic feel then there’s a good chance I’ll like it . More specifically always on the look out for Deep dub house through to throbbing Berlin Techno.

Open currently has a spot on Hoxton.fm, can you tell us a little bit about how you got involved with the station, and what sort of impact it has been having for you both?

Tony: Our Hoxton FM slot really started from Frazer emailing Dan Formless at Hoxton FM and asking if there were any slots available followed by a meeting to discuss our plans and vision for ‘Open’. Frazer and I wanted to launch Open in 2013 after a lot of planning at the end of 2012 and wanted to back this up with a weekly radio show on a station that had the same out look as us. Hoxton FM was the perfect fit from the start.

We cannot speak highly enough for the folks at Hoxton FM they have been a breath of fresh air , extremely supportive and proper music people. Big shout out to all the Hoxotn FM crew but special mention to Dan Formless and Rakhee Sudra . Dan & Rakhee have treated us as part of the family from day one and we look forward to working with them moving forward. Also a shout out to Normski , Pablo Godofredo Pabs & Maria PN .

Frazer: absolutely, Hoxotn fm rocks….great people involved across the board with bags of passion! Big Yo!

If you were told to reach for an all time favorite battle weapon, what would be the first out of your box?

Tony : jeeeeezzz that’s a very hard one …. But 2 tunes that come to mind for me that are totally timeless are – Nathan Fake’s – The Sky Was Pink (James Holden remix) and Booka Shades – Night falls. 2 tunes that almost bring a tear to my eye. They are amazing productions fit for any dance floor in my opinion.

Frazer : hmmm! I think Gat Décor ‘passion’ and ‘follow me’ on strictly rhythm……showing my age. Follow is actually a track that hooked me to everything and guess where I heard it first…The good old Cross! Damn where has that gone!

What musical plans do you have for the rest of 2013?

Tony: We have another Open event planned for June 1st with a very Techno orientated Line-up with Roberto headlining for us. Can’t wait for this one. We really just want to keep developing Open and follow from our first 2 events earlier in the year.

We also have plans for some roof top day time parties at some point …. Early days but something we really want to make a reality . Please help us pray for sunny weather in 2013 …. Hehe

Frazer: more parties like the big fella just said, many more productions, working on quite a few at the moment with releases set for later in the year and working together on some techno pieces is definitely on the cards…..The Campbell brothers are a coming….be warned! Haha!

A wasp flies into your flat/house – how do you deal with this potentially life threatening situation?
[for the record - Dyson hoover and tissue paper works for me]

Tony: Wet tea towel is my weapon of choice .

Frazer: move house…simple. I am very scared of them. If that is not an option a magazine always works well.

We bring a two part special for this weekend’s SHApodcast. Brothers Anthony and Frazer Campbell have started bringing some considered quality to London’s nightlife, launching a series of low key yet high quality parties that celebrate the best in house and techno. Having brought some quality names to their events—such as Nadja Lind, Jon Gurd, Tim Paris—the pair also host a radio show on Hoxton.fm, bringing their brand and vision to the airwaves.

Tonight we have Frazer stepping up to provide the soundtrack to your Friday night, plus the first part of an interview spanning their history as promoters and DJs. Enjoy!

You guys are veterans of the scene, what caused your 10 year hiatus? And what managed to tempt you back into the party hosting business?

Tony: ‘It was more like a 5 year break from DJing and promoting and, in truth, was a mixture of being sick of dealing with terrible promoters, needing a break to do other things on our professional life. Also Frazers accident where he fractured his skull in 3 places in 2007 and lost his hearing in 1 ear…..

Frazer: ’that sounds nasty doesn’t it!’ I was attacked back then ….happy slapped in fact and this definitely assisted in my decision to stop djing. I suffered 3 fractures as Tony said and also severed a nerve to my left ear which has left me partially deaf in one ear. Tinnitus is the biggest problem I have now but I can deal with that as things could have been far worse to be honest. Good things have come from that night; my outlook on life changed and I am a very positive person and only look forward never backwards! Never!. The promoters were a pain to deal with and a rest was needed! I dj’ed for a good stint of time, played at great locations and frankly had a ball!

Tony: What tempted us back ???… Its simple the music , you never lose that love of the music . The scene has changed a lot and London lost 3 legendary clubs in … The Cross , Turnmills and The End …. 3 absolutely amazing places with so many special memories both playing and partying…. We are filling up at the thought….

Frazer: the love for the music never goes away, it sounds a bit cheesey but its like for first love….you never forget…or the first time you….well you know what I mean! The scene is very different but appealing in a different way…the whole underground thing is very …underground! And this is why it has lured us back.

It has been said that London nightlife is facing a struggle – through alienating atmospheres, the difficulty of finding venues and attracting a crowd unwilling to be mobile. How do you find the scene at the moment and how is it impacting on getting Open off the ground?

Tony: Some great points there re the London scene …. There is so much competition out there but we think that is a good thing, competition breads positivity as well as negativity and in order to survive you need to keep on your toes and keep thinking of new ways to be original but also keeping the things that work consistent. Without competition things would be stale. In reality what we are all doing has been done a million times before so most important thing is to keep all variables to a high level and introduce new things periodically. Well that’s the plan for us at Open anyway.

Frazer: like Tony said, competition keeps things fresh. The scene before was always monopolized by the big boys and certain venues. smaller parties are cool. Finding venues can be a bit of a pain but it is always exciting to find something that feels right… there are many cool venues but you have to be realistic in terms of the size of your party. Don’t run before you can walk…..same with any business really….strategic decisions are key but don’t leave the passion and confidence behind.

Tony: We also feel working together with other like mind artists/promoters is imperative for getting your parties established and working as a collective rather than working against each other.

Frazer: For sure! It is a collective scene…many people with the same passion…. Working together is very important. There are always plenty of people to go round and you can work together. We are trustworthy…….we are not typical promoters. Lots of parties in London have a similar structure and aiding each other can work. Shame other people cannot help with the price of venue rentals!

Tony: yeah! Venues/spaces are often so expensive that it makes holding a party a massive financial risk .

Frazer: too darn right! The thing is that licensing is a big problem, clubs as such are disappearing due to property development so spaces are interesting to hire because they have raw appeal, they are fresh and they are slightly more unknown which makes a party feel unique and fresh…jeez I keep saying the word fresh!

Can you tell us about any special moments from your past promotions? Any crazy tales?

Tony: Well well well …. There were so many great moments in the past, Frazer playing at The Cross and Egg every month for a while before I was Djing was a particular highlight . We absolutely loved the vibe in The Cross and I suppose at Open we hope to bring a little bit of the memories/vibe from there to what we are doing today.

Frazer: I always had my eye set on playing at The Cross and I managed to do it which was a brucey bonus! Playing alongside the likes of Martin Dawson (king Roc) RIP mate, Tim Sheridan in Ibiza, Paolo Mojo…so many great times. Even the time I ejected a cd from a playing deck was funny because the crowd loved it and started cheering! They could see that a few beers had been consumed and were sympathetic to my condition! ha

Putting on a party, and sometimes DJing at them too, must be a challenge. Do you get to enjoy your nights, or do they fly by in a blur of anxiety and stress?

Tony: Good question…. Lets face it the key reason you are putting on the party is for the music you love and what better feeling than to be able to play the music you love at your own party with your own people? As you point out this comes paired with the long list of other things you have to control and monitor as a promoter which can cause extreme stress. I suppose we try and manage all of the above together ,we are brothers after all and share the responsibility from a creative, financial and organization perspective. Without this, it wouldn’t work.

Frazer: thanks Tony I didn’t think you cared! That sums it up !

SOULOCO return after a brief month’s sabbatical following another road block of a party with CITIZEN. To say they are excited about their next guest is a massive understatement.

SOULOCO are delighted to present another Scottish Exclusive; head honcho of his very own strictly vinyl record label and all round wizard of the Parisian underground House scene…….DJEBALI.

A club kid in Paris in the early 00s and inspired by great artists of the time Dan Ghenacia, Ivan Smagghe, Ricardo Villalobos and Luciano, Djebali was ultimately drawn into life, first gracing the decks of a club in 2001. Since then he has evolved into an accomplished house producer, launching his self-titled imprint in 2011 and making his Circoloco debut on the Terrace at DC10 Ibiza.

Developing a taste for deep and groovy house, Djebali cut his teeth at some of the finest hangouts in Paris, making numerous appearances at Rex Club and holding a residency at Freak n’Chic’s Batofar parties between 2008 and 2010. Further afield, Djebali has brought his bounce and charisma to the likes of Bar25, Space Ibiza, KamaKama, Vertigo Costa Rica, Gipsy Moscow, alongside influential names including Seth Troxler, Tania Volcano, Visionquest and Christian Burkhardt.

2011 saw the launch of ( djebali ), a limited vinyl series of only his music, produced, arranged and mixed exclusively on analogue gears.
Maya Jane Coles – The Highly Anticipated New Album “Comfort” Out July 1st 2013
Watch the Stunning New Video for Everything Ft. Karin Park Now: http://smarturl.it/mjceverythingvid

With 14 international magazine front covers to her name, numerous producer/DJ awards, top 10 places in the Resident Advisor DJ polls in both 2011 & 2012, 30+ countries played in the last 18 months, 10 million You Tube views, 165,000+ Facebook fans and over 2.5 million plays on Soundcloud, it’s hard to believe that Maya Jane Coles is yet to release an album.

All that is about to change in July 2013 with the release of one of the most eagerly awaited debut electronic albums in years; Maya Jane Coles – “Comfort”.

Maya’s rise up the ranks was noted by many in the music industry, including the major labels. The big cheques came in but were turned down – instead she opted to release the record on her own label I/AM/ME. In Maya’s own words:

“It’s very exciting to be in charge of my debut album. It’s given me total creative freedom and that is a necessity for me as an artist. I just hope that others will love the album as much as I loved working on it”.

This album really is a personal affair for Maya who produced, engineered and mixed the album at her modest home studio; playing every instrument and creating every sound including taking on vocal duties on tracks like the lo-fi “Stranger” and the hypnotic “Dreamer”. Keeping things even more personal, Maya also created the album’s artwork.

The album is reflective of Maya’s broader musical influences both in and outside the electronic world with Comfort having hints and shades of many genres from house, R&B and hip hop through to dub, indie and techno.

Everything Ft. Karin Park

The first single to be taken from the album is “Everything” featuring Scandinavian songstress Karin Park on vocals and co-writing duties. “Everything” also marks the arrival of Maya’s debut music video – a noir tale of ornithological obsession. The video’s director Thomas Knights also appears on Comfort a beautiful soul vocal on the down tempo “When I’m In Love”.

Karin Park is a Grammy Award winning 6 foot plus Swedish multi-instrumentalist/performer raised in the jungles of Japan, whose own album “Highway Poetry” was produced in part by The Knife’s Christoph Bergen. Having remixed Karin’s track “A Thousand Loaded Guns” under her Nocturnal Sunshine moniker, Maya was eager to work with Karin again and created a backing track with her in mind. Karin then wrote and performed the top line remotely between London and Scandinavia.

Comfort

The album’s family feel also sees Maya reunited with Catherine Pockson of Alpines whose haunting vocal features on the dark R&B of “Fall from Grace”. Maya had previously worked with Alpines, producing their collaboration covering Carly’s Simon’s “Why” as well as remixing the band’s single “Cocoon” under Maya’s Nocturnal Sunshine alias.

Carrying on the remix theme, Maya also duets with legendary producer/rapper Tricky on “Wait for You” having previously remixed his track “Time To Dance”.

There are also new collaborations with friends, with Maya duetting with electronic icon Miss Kittin on “Take A Ride”, and the pioneering Kim Ann Foxman; formerly front woman of Hercules & The Love Affair on future single “Burning Bright”.

Maya also sought to bring fresh voices into the electronic domain recruiting Nadine Shah’s stunning husky rasp to the “Blame”.
There are more largely instrumental moments in the album too with the emotive “Come Home” and the album’s title track “Comfort”.

With upcoming gigs in 2013 supporting the album including Coachella (USA), Fuji Rocks (Japan), Glastonbury (UK), Lowlands (Holland), Sonar (Spain), Ultra (USA) and a whole host of other festivals, club shows and a frantic Ibiza season ahead. It seems that Maya will be bringing “Comfort” to ears all over the world and showing again just why she is regarded as one of the most exciting producers in a generation.
