Hot! Fabric 66 // Ben Klock [Fabric]

“Best Techno entry in the Fabric series” is quite a bold claim to make with a catalogue that features Surgeon, Slam and Adam Beyer in its ranks, but it is a claim that can be made with unshakable confidence. Ben Klock‘s Fabric mix brings a sense of instant clarity usually only associated with a swift stab to the manparts by a large and angry wasp. Crisp and clear, like the crunch of foot on a frosty lawn, the murkier fog laden side of contemporary Techno is sidestepped in favour of piercing mid-range and breathless tension.

While there may be no surprises with the producers adorning this mix—familiar names such as Truncate, Octave One, Marcel Dettmann, DVS1 and Planetary Assault Systems all featuring in a selection containing the rare and unreleased—it is Ben’s ability to hold and release in all the right moments that captures your imagination.

You are led by the earlobes through Trevino‘s Forged gnarled determination and then levitated six inches off the ground with the acidic tension of K-Hand’s Starz. Suspenseful moments stride into dissonant rumble, like the motorised hiss and distortion of Sagat‘s Few Mysteries Solved In A Year Of Contact, these Detroit moments then sitting side by side with the classic House strains of Floorplan‘s Never Grow Old and Dubstep swing of Burial‘s Raver.

Crowd pleasing abandon can be found in Ben Klock‘s own thump and breaks edit of Josh Wink‘s Are You There?, a blast from the past that was overlooked in a period in time that saw Higher State Of Consciousness and I’m Ready. The absolute masterstroke of the mix comes with a delightful swerve into 3/4 structures in Steve Rachmad‘s Rotary and Staffan Linzatti‘s In Time, both twirling you by the hand into a dizzy spin away from the rigidity framework of standard Techno.

By the time the robo-carnival of James Ruskin’s Detached and Alva Noto‘s massive bass rumble in Monophaser 2 sees you out, you will blink your eyes in wonder that a full mix has blasted through your cochlea in what feels like scant minutes. Time flies has never been so true.
