Erik Eriksson // Love Cannot [Freerange]

As tender as a first kiss and as melancholic the subsequent break-up, the lead cut on Erick Erickson’s debut EP on Freerange ‘Love Cannot’ is a cut above your average deep house fare. Crisp beats underpin a de-tuned vocal, synth washes that ebb and flow, and fragile analogue motifs that combine to deliver a trenchant riposte to idea that love will save the day. Remix duties fall to Mr Beatnik, who delivers a slightly more driving take, stripping things down to the bare bones, allowing the groove to come to the fore and edging things closer to peak time.
While the flip side reveals ‘Let Them Know’ to be a perfect Summer house track; skippy beats, sun soaked pads and jaunty riffs that should have outdoor revellers reaching for the sky (hopefully after they’ve reached for the factor 25). The dub version of ‘Let Them Know’ is, as you’d imagine, an adventure in dub – abstract sounds pop and crackle before echoing into infinity. All in all another worthy addition to the Freerange catalogue.
