Erick Hernandez – To The Moon EP [Revolucion Records]

Ever wondered what it would be like to be terrified on Jack Sparrows ‘The Black Pearl’ – lashing through a murderous storm, whilst being beaten by savage electronica? Well, Miami’s Erick Hernandez is on hand to clear that one up with opening track Straight to the Moon.

It’s a tortured yet immediate track, with the kick desperately trying to nail the (delightfully produced and original) creaked-out electronica down. Then there’s the snares that sounds more like a whip being cracked away at a bruised and beaten crew – unjustly demanding more! With depth-charged vox and effects to fully realise the track, this is dark, submersive, submissive stuff. Yaar!

I Go is more tracky affair, continuing the underwater cinematics and holds up well against the opener. There’s good usage of some lo-fi movie samples, alongside a forlorn female snip that lends the track a human touch which means the track retains interest throughout. Fine fayre indeed!

Fly Like a Bird wraps things up with a relentless jacking affair, where, again, Erick seems to keep the knack of finding appropriate unique vocal samples to emply in his work. The breaks are effective and well thought out, with some nice pads and risers. The pad-work is a little little too repetitive for my personal taste, but that’s all that is, as, no doubt, Sneak fans will jump on this one.

A solid start to the year for Revolucion Records.

My love for electronic music started in my early teens. Fascinated by my friend Scott’s Technics 1210’s and wealth of mixtapes, I used to ‘borrow’ his tapes and make copies. Read more about me by clicking here.
