Chelonis R Jones // I Don’t Know [Get Physical]

Getting rave reviews is something that Chelonis R Jones is used to for the past two-decades, whether it’s as a painter, poet, singer, songwriter or producer. His contributions as co-writer and vocalist to so many tracks (80+ now) have touched many souls, including my own, and graced my own sets for many a year with highlights including 49 Percent with Royksopp and the quite brilliant Bad Love with Bookashade.
I was excited at the prospect of this re-release 9 years after it featured in the early Get Physical days and for my money, was the standout track of the 2005 Dislocated Genius LP. This is Part 1 and features a Butch Remix alongside the Original and a handy Accapella for the creative types among us.
It starts with lustrous and delicate percussive layers, little cowbells punctuate the bars, with the bass unlocking perfectly into the mix. Then the genius of the Jones vocal falls in and it’s all breathtaking, emotive stuff from there-after. Everything builds sumptuously and the break is exactly what we’re after – falling-beats and rising strings before the drop – amazing!
The Originals components are woven expertly and seem effortlessly put together, however, don’t be fooled by this. The complexity of the elements and arrangement means this has had some serious hours and love in the studio, ensuring it sounds just incredible. I was expecting something a little more dubby and percussive from Butch, but he’s completely nailed this one – taking a great track and (in the best tradition of remixing) makes it even better.
It’s an essential and timeless stunner from start to finish. It’s the sound of days in, nights out, making up or making love – a soundtrack for 2012 and beyond. The first time I have said this on SHA – classic!
