Cajmere & Gene Farris // White Label EP [Cajual Records]

Nothing beats a bit of disco sampling house done right, and if anyone is going to show all the middling and apathetic crate diggers how to do it right, then its Cajual. “Mr Green Velvet” Cajmere seems to be on a bit of a revival after a bit of a musical hiatus that followed rather mega hits like La La Land. Here we see him teaming up with Gene Farris once more and giving a few disco classics the 10 Years Younger Treatment.

Chic’s I Want Your Love is first up on the looping table with Coconuts, constantly chanting “want your love, I need your love” over a headshaking electronic slapped bass, working in a tease to the “reach for the sky!” breakdown. Purposeful enough to never sound hackneyed in any shape or form, the major pitfall of mining the classics.

Being old and knackered enough to remember Todd Terry’s frankly awesome Fingertrips EP in 1996, I was already firmly smiling and foot tapping within seconds of putting The Biz. Now this is a rather dangerous record to fall into my hands as Never Gonna Get Enough is one of my all time favourites and it would be far too easy to dismiss with no more than a “pah! In my day!”. Although I do have to say this is rather fetching! Although I miss the firing disco stabs that perforated Todd Terry’s effort, Cajmere & Gene seem to have turned on the Technicolour in the most effective manner.

Big chunky beats all around, put aside your disco snobbery and indulge.
