Hot! Art Department & Konrad Black // Graveyard Tab [No19 Music]

A company I once worked for used to hire an organisation to provide lunchtime platters that, on face value, had an interesting approach to its consumables. It felt like they had two top hats, each with foodstuffs and cooking methods written inside, and they would pick out at random a culinary pairing to present to us. Battered broccoli and battered new potato were two particular highlights, obviously for people who need a buffet platter to entirely be made up of the colour yellow. In fact I’m convinced that the second hat just contained scraps of paper with the word “batter” scrawled on them.

It’s this mentality that immediately popped into my mind when I saw the pairing of Art Department and Konrad Black on this release, one I associate with lofi house and the other with teeth bared and dark tech house. Somehow, this all perfectly sits in unison, Art Department’s unmistakable b-movie horror melodies, slooshy hihats and “Baby!” vocal, pairing with a certain grit and purpose, provided by Konrad’s dark bassy groove. Every now and again you think you have managed to pluck out where Art Department begins and Konrad ends, but with a swift flick of the whisk, everything is melted together like a marble of white and dark chocolate. Smooth, yet so good to hear the deep boys getting dark with it.
